Was it Oscar Wilde who first coined the phrase “You never get a second chance to make a first impression..?” That special spark that you feel when you first see something really astonishing is something that architects and designers really strive to get right in every aspect of their work. We work and rework drawings and models at design stage to ensure that, in its finished state, in that moment that the viewer first stumbles across a new building, or a new space, that they instinctively know that they are going to come across something very special. The viewer needs to know that they are going to see something that will make a lasting impression on them and that what they see from the start is going to continue… Nowhere is that clearer than in the entrance to a building. I have found some super examples of lovely entrance spaces and doorways. I hope to use them as inspiration in my own work…
